Inclusion, allyship and support are essential for individual wellness and community health. The pandemic drove home how social we are as human beings. Being there for one another is not just a nice thing to do – it results in better health.

The term Pride was coined locally by a Minnesotan activist in 1969. It focuses on a positive self-identity, dignity, equality and a collaborative opposition to shame and stigma. Take, for example, how data shows that LGBTQA+ teens are at high risk for certain conditions, even suicide. Locally, we have Centers and Clinics who serve LGBTQA+ patients and provide care specific to each patient and their needs. Nationwide, online support like the Trevor Project can help address isolation.

In medicine this month, we also celebrate global healthcare and science advocates, from historical contributors like Alan Turing, Florence Nightingale and Sally Ride to contemporaries like Rachel Levine, an admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service. And closer to home, we have an opportunity to celebrate and laud our colleagues, friends and family with festivities and events highlighting excellence in inclusive research, service and care. From BBQs to festivals, we can gather, engage and enjoy this celebration and the gifts of our community together.

We all contribute to a sense of belonging for each other. Connect, learn more and celebrate!

Happy Pride!
